Students vote accounting number one

Accounting is the top career choice for Australian university students and graduates, according to a GradConnection survey.

GradConnection analysed their database of 16,000 students and graduates who ranked industry sectors by favorability, with 13.6 per cent favouring accounting.

A further breakdown of the data showed 36.7 per cent of graduates are interested in financial accounting, 34.6 per cent are interested in tax, 30.2 per cent are interested in external audit, 29.4 per cent are interested in internal audit and 27 per cent are interested in management roles.

CPA Australia's CPA Program covers management accounting, economics, business law, financial accounting and reporting, advanced audit and assurance.

CPA Program, the pathway to becoming a CPA, responds to employer demand by providing skills that deliver value. CPAs are highly qualified finance professionals that are in demand.

Students wanting paid work experience with some of the biggest companies in the world in a range of sectors can apply to be part of CPA Australia's Internship Program. Applications for the 2009 internship program have now closed.

Information on the 2010 Internship Program will be available next year.

Further data from the GradConnection survey revealed 35.7 per cent are looking for a mentoring program. To become a CPA, a practical experience requirement needs to be fulfilled under the supervision of a mentor. The Mentor Program, among other aims, further develops Associate members' work in a professional accounting or finance role.
