About the Mentor Program

Associate members must complete the Practical Experience Mentor Program (Mentor Program) to become a CPA. The three-year Mentor Program provides a framework for developing and demonstrating practical workplace skills at a professional level in the areas of accounting or finance.

The Mentor Program is designed to align with CPA Program studies and to complement an Associate members' work in a professional accounting or finance role. The program classifies professional accounting work into nine areas:

  • academia
  • auditing / assurance
  • financial accounting
  • financial planning
  • information technology
  • insolvency and reconstruction
  • management accounting
  • taxation
  • treasury / financial risk management

These areas of work are the foundation of the Mentor Program. Members choose the areas of work which are most applicable to their work role. Within the member's chosen areas of work, they need to demonstrate specific skill sets before completing the program.

The Mentor Program can be completed anywhere in the world, provided you are working at least 17.5 hours per week in a professional accounting or finance role.

Mentored practical work experience is a requirement of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). IFAC is the governing body for all prestigious accounting associations.
